And yet many, many of us try to go around following all the rules, trying to love others...while we have no real sense of how much we are loved by God (or in some cases, even if we are loved by God.)
We can be stingy and misguided with our attempts to love when we are doing from a tank that is less than full...or even empty!
Do you know...
...that you are engraved on the palms of His hands (Isaiah 49:16)?
...that you are never out of His mind (Psalm 139:17-18)?
...that you know Him because He first knew you (Jeremiah 1:5)?
...that you are His friend (John 15:15)?
...that you are the apple of His eye (Zechariah 2:8)?
Do you know? Have you stopped to allow God to remind you? Is your tank full?
Brother Lawrence, in The Practice of the Presence of God, writes, “We must know before we can love. In order to know God, we must often think of Him; and when we come to love Him, we shall then also think of Him often, for our heart will be with our treasure.”
A desert cannot provide living water. We cannot pour out when we are not filled up....or as "Prof" put it, "You cannot impart what you do not possess."
How would we live and love differently if we did it from a position of abundance - knowing fully that we are loved and cared for by the Most High God?
As we head into this week, let's make sure we take time and focus on being 'filled up' with His love...
...so that we can be ambassadors of Christ's love to those He has placed in our lives.
Let us not love with words but with actions and truth. ~ 1 John 3:18
I pray that your love will overflow more and more. ~Philippians 1:9
