The inner character quality of self-control is man's best God-given defense against the sinful influences which incessantly wage war against the soul. Humanly, we can ward off the first small assault of the enemy, but without a solid wall there is no lasting defense for the temptations that we face every day.
God has given us egkrateia - the Greek word commonly translated as "self-control" - defined as "inward power" to resist sin and to glorify Him with our minds, bodies, attitudes, words and actions.
We have the choice to access and rely on that power in the face of the many forms of temptation we come up against every day.
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of power and of love and of self-control. ~ 2 Timothy 1:7
