Complacency Crisis

Let's be honest. Complacency is comfortable.  By definition it is "a feeling of quiet pleasure or security...a satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc."  That doesn't sound like a crisis.  It actually sounds pretty good.  Unfortunately, that's only part of the definition.  The remaining part says, "often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, etc."

Complacency is actual dangerous BECAUSE it feels so comfortable.  Complacency is not something we aim for or plan on.  It creeps in and swallows us up like quicksand.

Complacency stagnates our growth, deadens our vision, and stifles our creativity, it robs us from new opportunities and makes us averse to risk-taking.

❝Complacency is a deadly foe of all spiritual growth. Acute desire must be present or there will be no manifestation of Christ to His people. He waits to be wanted. Too bad that with many of us He waits so long, so very long, in vain.❞― A.W. Tozer

Complacent spirituality is in danger of missing out.
Complacent spirituality doesn't seek...doesn't expect.
Complacent spirituality may pray because it's what we're supposed to do; but complacent spirituality has lost sight of the heart and power of a living and active God.

I hate to see complacency prevail in our lives when it's so directly contrary to the teaching of Christ. ~Jimmy Carter

The only way to break ourselves free from the bonds of complacency is by challenging ourselves.
Summer will be winding down soon.  Fall is often a time to renew commitments. Let's examine our spiritual goals.  If we don't have them, let's get some!  Pick a theme verse, start a new Bible reading plan, join or recommit to a Bible study, read a spiritual book, disciple a young person.  The ideas are endless - but let's do something.  Let's not get trapped in the complacent quicksand.

For the waywardness of the simple will kill them,
and the complacency of fools will destroy them.
                                                                     ~Proverbs 1:32
