But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place. The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. ~John 14:26
A second-grade teacher suspected that one of her students had stolen candy from her desk. When she asked him, he denied it. Over the weekend, however, his conscience became hard to live with. On Monday he came up to her desk. “I took the candy,” he said. “I’m sorry for lying to you. Will you forgive me?”
Remembering what his teacher had taught about thorough confession, the boy continued, “I’m prepared to accept the consequences.”
“What do you think they should be?”
“Well, I could’ve bought the candy for 50 cents; how about if I give you 75 cents?”
He then recalled the “double-trouble principle” she’d taught him (when you make a bad choice and then lie about it or blame others, you deserve two consequences). So he added, “I think I should give you another quarter because I lied to you.”
Next morning the second grader handed his teacher one dollar from his own piggy bank. He walked away with a clear conscience, a valuable lesson, and the knowledge that nothing stood between him and his teacher ~Steve Farrar, Point Man
What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
