In his booklet, “Tyranny of the Urgent,” Charles Hummel quotes a wise man who said to him, “Your greatest danger is letting the urgent things crowd out the important.” Oswald Chambers, author of My Utmost for His Highest, said “The good is often the enemy of the best.”
We live in a culture of frenetic activity. It’s easy to mistake activity for productivity. Knowing and living our priorities guides us to accomplish what is truly important.
Growing in our relationship to God through Jesus Christ is the most important priority we can have. Just like any relationship, we need to make time to be with Him. Reading His Word and talking with Him in prayer daily strengthens our relationship with Him. As we do this, asking Him to guide us, He gives us wisdom in our decision making.
Part of this wisdom is taking time to evaluate our lives on a regular basis in terms of how we are using our time and if it aligns with His will for our lives. Take time to ask for God’s guidance before accepting that next commitment or responsibility.
God’s priorities are building relationships of love, first with Him, and then with the people He gives us-- our family, friends and neighbors.
If we do not take time to asses our lives, it’s easy for the urgent to usurp the important. Take time today to ask Him for wisdom so that our choices reflect our priorities.
